ISLAND LIFE COLUMNIST
Profile

Catherine Burns (BA Hons, Dip ION) is a Nutritional Therapist trained by the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London, UK. After marrying her Bermudian husband and moving to the Island she worked in the worksite wellness field for seven years. She is currently the Managing Director of natural ltd - a nutrition consultancy offering preventive health solutions. Catherine has been running Nutrifit since 2007 and has been writing a weekly nutrition column for The Royal Gazette since 2005. Food for Thought began as a factual nutrition column that quickly took on some humour as stories of Catherine's domestic highs and lows crept in. Catherine is mum to two girls (1.5 and 4) who are often perfect examples of healthy living and occasionally the polar opposite. Catherine strives every day to nourish her daughters and to help people in Bermuda lead healthier lives. Please note that Catherine is not a Registered Dietitian. Mummy,” said Belle with a very serious face (as I got to the crucial part of my story). “Don’t be so ridiculous!”

There is nothing funnier than your kids getting cross and throwing your words right back at you.

    In all the parenting...

    Stressed about being stressed?

Busy can be good. It can mean you’re successful, engaged and fulfilled, but it can also mean you’re overstretched, unfocused and exhausted.

At an on-site seminar this week, we discussed how “busy” is no longer the status symbol it once...

Best to start teaching your children early

I’m sitting on the floor during the last few hours of Natural Kids camp.

So far today, the kids have baked banana bread, done Zumba, learnt how to decode the “sugars” part of a food label, listened to stories, finished off some artwork and...

Back to reality ... and Superfood on Toast

Back from holiday and down to earth with a bump.

Although no one ever gives you sympathy when you tell them you’re going home to Bermuda, do they? And really, they’re right. We all live where most of the world would give anything to...

Cookies for breakfast, toast for lunch?

Three years ago Chloe decided we should sell cookies as a summer project for Open Airways and the SPCA.

It was the year our Holy Crap® cookies were born and she thought the name was so hysterical she kept looking for an excuse to say it...

How to temper those brutal AC35 hangovers

So, we’re halfway through America’s Cup and just reached the other side of carnival. My newsfeed is packed with photos of people dancing and drinking and boating and drinking … I know there’s a large section of the Bermuda population that doesn’t...

    Running through the summer heat

By the time this prints, I’ll either be turning circles because we ran May 24, or I’ll be in a hospital wing at KEMH.

Worst-case scenario, my obituary will be on the next page. If it is, I hope it says something fun and very inappropriate.

Summer mojo – sauce for just about anything!

Last night was girls’ night and, in the usual way, we descended on a friend with a collection of dishes all based around a theme. This time we went Spanish, so there were olives and serrano and paella and salads ... and sangria, of course. I’d...

    Now for something saucy!

I’m having one of those days where my Beat the Couch, Nutrifit, The Royal Gazette and admin deadlines are all colliding.

Truth be told, I’m at my desk still in sweaty running gear, expecting a client in 20 minutes,...

Anxiety and panic? Tips to calm you down

Once upon a time I had awful anxiety or rather, it had me. Worry and panic about God knows what became a running commentary in my brain, the backdrop to every single day. There would be a nanosecond, when I first woke up in the morning, when I...

Grass-fed beef – why all the hype?

Breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day — and it is.

It’s just a shame that (in our house, at least) it’s interrupted by me shouting an assortment of desperate instructions up and down the stairs, usually to do with...

You think faeces in soda is bad?

Since having kids all sorts of strange things have happened to my food. I have discovered glitter in my cereal and crayons in my tea. I have rescued Strawberry Shortcake from the bottom of a bag of nuts. I will never, ever, forget the case of the...

Using food to lift your mood?

Yesterday was World Book Day. Did you know that? I found out a few days ago on the way home from school. Car rides are the best time for information extraction — they are strapped in and have nothing to do except download their days. I have a few...

Is giving up gluten good for you?

Gluten is a hot topic these days. Gluten-free is appearing on food labels everywhere, making life much easier for people with coeliac disease (who avoid gluten out of medical necessity), but a little more confusing for everyone else.

    You...

Detox your lunch with delicious Moroccan salad

Well, it’s Friday the 13th, so I hope your day has been free of major disasters. No crashes on the way to work or spilling coffee in the car! I see so many people clinging onto their morning cup of adrenalin as they drive — and I don’t blame...

    It’s all in the mind(set)

Today’s run to the beach and back was definitely the most eventful so far. First off, I was clipped by a taxi on the way (life flashed before my eyes and everything)! Then I was soaked by a rogue wave as I climbed over the rocks and not...

Christmas is coming, let’s make salad!

Simple steps to beat the bugs

My first visit to Bermuda was Christmas 1996. I remember riding a scooter in shorts and flip flops, scorching my shoulders and loving the warm breeze.
